What's Happening In & Around Connecticut: October Edition

Part of our mission here at Nutmeg Institute we like to highlight the creative events happening in and around the Nutmeg state. Here's a selection of a few of the events occurring this month:

It's October! Which means it's time for pumpkin-flavored everything, flannel shirts, and the slow-creeping claw of winter setting in... We're kidding (sort of); it's time for more opportunities to connect with the local film industry.

October kicked off with a special Asbury Shorts Film Concert series at Fairfield Theatre Company and included a screening of the 2018 48 Hour Film Project New Haven runner-up Betaloop by Connecticut Filmworks. We hope you were able to make it, it's a great opportunity to watch some of the best short films in the world.

Friday night, October 5th, gives you another chance to check out the New Haven-pizza focused documentary, Pizza: A Love Story, at New England Brewing Company. Director Gorman Bechard's film screening to a standing-room only crowd in it's initial release at the 2018 NHDocs: The New Haven Documentary Film Festival. This still work-in-progress film looks at what makes celebrities send drivers just to get a taste of New Haven pizza when they're in the tri-state area, or why New Haven Pizza (namely Pepe's, Modern, and Sally's) is continuously ranked as the top pizza in the world.

Speaking of NHDocs, submissions are now open for the 2019 festival so get your next documentary in or let your fellow creators know they should get their next docs in.

Connecticut must have film festivals on the mind this month. Both Mystic Film Festival and Ridgefield Independent Film Festival will be taking place October 18-21. Two beautiful towns, so many fantastic films. In addition to the opening night film, Starfish by writer/director Shira Levin, Mystic will feature over 50 films and several panels focused on creating and telling stories. Ridgefield will host a number of screenings, galas, and parties with appearances by guests like Allison Williams in the historic and contemporary locations like the Ridgefield Playhouse and Aldrich Art Museum.

In between those festivals, on October 20th, our friends at Two Roads Brewing Company is hosting their Roadsmary's Pumpkin Fest, a celebration of their classic pumpkin brew. At the end of the night they'll screen cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show and the winner of the Roadsmary's Baby Horror Film Challenge. You still have until October 8th to film and submit your short. Get to scaring and drinking responsibly.

Finally, wrap up the month with a special Hallow-freaka-ween Film Appreciation Project. Come in costume, watch some fun shorts, and get spoopy! Things get weird October 27th starting at the witching hour.

As you can see there's a lot going on in the Nutmeg State and we're sure we missed a ton of great events. If you know of something interesting going on this month drop us a line in the comments!
