What's Happening In & Around Connecticut: August Edition

August 1, 2018

As part of our mission here at Nutmeg Institute we like to highlight the creative events happening in and around the Nutmeg state. Here's a selection of a few of the events occurring this month:

Happy August! And for a lot you this means Happy 48HFP Premiere Day! What better way to start off the month than by This year's 48 Hour Film Project - New Haven screening will feature 31 films made in under a weekend. The premieres will take place at The Bijou Theater in Bridgeport. Get your tickets here. And be on the lookout this year's required items - Characters: "Martin or Maureen Nutmeg, a Liar"; Prop: Children's Book; and Line: "Where have I heard that before?"

One of the most impressive things about this year's 48HFP was the number of the Connecticut creators who have taken part. It's the highest we've ever had and it's inspiring to see the CT creator community coming together. If you want more of it, check out the Community Collisions at the new Aligning Studio at District. With a goal of engaging and developing untapped creativity and insight within our communities, these events are CAN'T MISS. We'll be there August 7th if you want to catch up but there are multiple opportunities to take part.

Also happening August 7th is a Rockin' event at the Bristol Public Library. Libraries are home to stories and storytellers and we couldn't agree more than libraries rock. So to celebrate, the Bristol Public Library will host a number of scenes from rock and roll movies including Grease, A Hard Day's Night, High Fidelity, and Purple Rain while sharing behind the scenes stories. The event is free but you're encouraged to register here

In case you haven't networked and met enough creators this month (which, there is never too many people to meet), Real Art Ways is hosting their monthly Creative Cocktail hour on August 16th. We know we're focused on the New Haven area a lot (it's where we're from) so it's good to stretch out and meet creators from around the state. As Real Art Ways says, "Come with friends or come by yourself." This month's event features: Noah Loesberg exploring our interaction with architecture, the KNMDK Dance Collective, Mercado Food Truck and so much more!

Friday, August 24th the 48 Hour Film Project - New Haven returns to the Bijou Theatre to celebrate the Best of the Best for the 2018 event. We'll be screening this year's top films and then handing out awards for everything from Best Use of 48 Character to Best Film. Dress to Impress for Red Carpet pictures and share in the anticipation to see who is named Best of New Haven!

And finally, we end August with some of our favorite things: Craft Beer, Short Films, and Friends. Two Roads' Hoppywood series returns with an outdoor screening of the comedy classic Office Space. But the best part, two 48HFP short films: 2017's Runner-Up Big Shot and the 2018 Winner will screen before the feature presentation. Enjoy a brew, some good films, and great friends just in time for summer to come to a close.

As you can see there's a lot going on in the Nutmeg State and we're sure we missed a ton of great events. If you know of something interesting going on this month drop us a line in the comments!
