What's Happening In & Around Connecticut: June Edition

As part of our mission here at Nutmeg Institute we like to highlight the creative events happening in and around the Nutmeg state. Here's a selection of a few of the events occurring this month:

June is set up to be a very exciting month. As the 2018 48 Hour Film Project nears its July Kickoff weekend there will be many opportunities to catch Team Nutmeg in the wild. We’ll be out connecting with filmmakers and content creators throughout the area and we hope to see you there as well.

Kicking things off this month are two New Haven-based events. First is Lights, Camera, ActiOn 9 on Friday June 1st. This version of the regular On 9 / Ninth Ward showcase is sponsored by Downtown NHV and Artspace New Haven. Meet at Baobab Tree Studios and take part in a promotional short film highlighting the 9th Square. Trish will be there representing the 48HFP. You can also join several exhibiting artists for a Storefront Stroll, where they will discuss the artwork and explore the city’s historic past, present, and future.

On the other side of town, NH Docs, the New Haven Documentary Film Festival is in its second night. The festival which kicked off May 31st with a special screening of the work-in-progress Pizza, A Love Story, features over 75 films, panels, and parties throughout its eleven-day run. Most of the events are free and will take place at the Whitney Humanities Center. Check out Jim O’Connor’s Family Meal, the Sundance Film Festival Audience Award This Is Home: A Refugee Story, three different Short Film Blocks featuring highly engaging and bite-sized documentaries, the Student Film Showcase, separate retrospectives for acclaimed filmmakers Amy Berg, Sheila Nevins, and Su Friedrich, and so much more! Entering its fifth year, NH Docs has something for everyone and the hope to strengthen the documentary film community.

If you can’t make it down to New Haven, another film festival is happening in the state’s capital. The 31st Connecticut LGBT Festival by Out Film CT runs June 1 – 9 at Cinestudio. “Connecticut’s longest-running film festival, holds a special place in our state’s cultural landscape, bringing the community together to introduce, celebrate and rediscover the ideas and values that make the LGBT community unique.” Enjoy the featured critically acclaimed films and stick around for the Closing Party.

On Sunday June 10th, we lighten the mood with another Nutmeg Institute Brunch. It's summer so to celebrate we're screening Weekend at Bernie's! Join us at Brother Jimmy's for some summer kick-off fun with good food, good drinks, and great company before hitting the beach.

Sticking in Hartford on June 14th is special screening and discussion of Without a Net: The Digital Divide in America. Sponsored by the Hartford Public Library, Without a Net examines digital inequalities in public school classrooms affect students and how equipping underserved communities can help level the playing field. The film begins at 5:15pm with a panel discussion to follow.

Also happening on the 14th is a screening of the Cult Classic: Eraserhead at the Avon Theatre in Stamford. Directed by David Lynch, Eraserhead is the dark and twisted look at Henry Spencer whose angry girlfriend just gave birth to a mutant child. Shot in black and white, Lynch's first feature film stands as a milestone to independent filmmaking. The historic Avon Theatre features some of the best of independent, documentary, classical, and educational programming. If nothing else you should use this as an opportunity to see two legendary pieces of the film world.

Finally, Connecticut Cult Classics looks to scare up some summer fun with Night of Living Zom Com a double feature of Return of Living Dead and Shaun of the Dead. That's it for June. If you need us we'll be at the pub, having a pint, and enjoying the fun!

As you can see there's a lot going on in the Nutmeg State and we're sure we missed a ton of great events. If you know of something interesting going on this month drop us a line in the comments!
