What's Happening In & Around Connecticut: April Edition
As part of our mission here at Nutmeg Institute we like to highlight the creative events happening in and around the Nutmeg state. Here's a selection of a few of the events occurring this month:
In like a lion and out like a pastel-colored rabbit...that's the saying right? What a month March was and April looks to be just as exciting.
We kick things off with a celebration of our fearless leader, Trish Clark's birthday on April 2nd! We're not telling you how young she is but we do have some fun stuff in store.
You can even celebrate with Trish and the whole Nutmeg team at our Movie Brunch the following weekend. After a month away we're back! This time we're screening the Coen Brothers' classic Raising Arizona. Join us again or for the first time at Brother Jimmy's BBQ in New Haven on Sunday April 8th. Brunch opens at 11:30 with the film kicking off around 12:15.
And if one Coen Brothers film isn't enough, our friends to the north at the West Hartford Public Library are kicking off their Cult Film Series with The Big Lebowski on April 10th. New Haven 48 Hour Film Project participants will remember Lebowski is one of our faves as well. It's a film that really ties the room together, Dude. Later in the month, the Film Series continues with Repo Man. In addition to these great film screenings, the WHPL is also organizing a Video Contest, the winner can take home a GoPro. Submissions are open through April and up to May 15th.
April 12th continues the trend of film screenings for the month. LEAP, which stands for Leadership, Education & Athletics Partnership, is hosting a one-of-a-kind film screening of Marshall. The 2017 film starring Chadwick Boseman (42, Black Panther) in the lead role of Thurgood Marshall, the crusading attorney who becomes the first African-American Justice on the Supreme Court of the United States. Following the screening there will be a Q&A with the screenwriter of the film and CT-based attorney, Michael Koskoff. This special screening will benefit LEAP's mission of helping prepare the youth of today to become the leaders of tomorrow. Add it to your calendar and register here. (Please note, it's highly encouraged to register early)
Real Art Ways is hosting cool-sounding film series: Science On Screen. This series is described “creative pairings of classic, cult, and documentary films with lively introductions by notable figures from the world of science, technology, and medicine.” This month's screening, April 17th at 7pm, will include Fast, Cheap, and Out of Control, a documentary on four diverse and eccentric jobs followed by a discussion with Kent D. Dunlap, PhD, an explorer of different facets of biology including demonstrating how physiological processes are, in part, products of molecular and ecological processes, but also have particular (emergent) properties at the organismal level.
With all these great events happening this month, don't forget to submit your film to the 1st Annual Mystic Film Festival taking place in October. The Early Bird Registration discount ends April 30th. We'll highlight this great new festival in more detail as it gets closer but it's focus on community engagement and New England filmmakers really gets us excited.
As you can see there's a lot going on in the Nutmeg State and we're sure we missed a ton of great events. If you know of something interesting going on this month drop us a line in the comments!
